Organic cotton being very important in the modern world economy has a significant role in protecting farmers and their environment from pesticide poisoning and in maintaining environmentally sustainable manufacturing industry that meets the consumer demand. Based on this, Partner Africa has been working on capacity building of cotton farmers and all actors in the cotton and textile value chain in sustainable organic cotton production in South Region of Ethiopia. The project in Gamo and Wolaita zones has shown promising result. The production of the year 2025/26 is collected through the established cooperatives.

The seed cotton has been ginned at the local ginnery and is ready for marketing. In order to solve the future marketing challenge, the Gamo development association signed a memorandum of understanding with the project and the cooperatives to handle the marketing side, which will play a crucial role in creating a sustainable market linkage. In addition to this, the organic certification process two cooperatives in Gamo and Wolaita is going to be finalized which will contribute in ensuring the quality standard as well as improved income for the local farmers.
